Author, Loung Ung and Actress/Producer, Angelina Jolie, visit our GALA High School girls to talk about Ms. Ung's book, "First They Killed My Father" and the film of the same name. What a thrill for our girls to hear from two female leaders tell their stories of resilience and determination! Read the full story here:
Our 2017-2018 School year has been so humbled to have so many leaders speak to our girls. We will update over the next few months. Here are additional highlights so far!
Ms. Nour - Game Developer at Entertainment Software Corporation
Ms. Grimes - Operation Hope Financial Literacy
Ms. Moody - WSP Engineering
Ms. Glen - Public Affairs Senior Manager at Grifols, a global Biomedical Manufacturing Firm. Girls learned about the industry and participated in a gowning exercise - trying to put on a gown without contaminating it as if they were going into a lab. Thanks to Ms. Hawkins, health professional on Senator Holly Mitchell's STEM education committee, for bringing Ms. Glenn to our school.
LA School Board President Monica Garcia and Board Member Nick Melvoin - They visited our campus this week. Mr. Melvoin tweeted that he was "thrilled to see all the amazing electives at the school where girls love to be smart, self-confident and successful."
Steve Kang - From Representative Ridley-Thomas' office toured GALA and discussed upcoming internships for 9th and 10th grade students.
Students and parents learned about the latest in Cyberbullying and Cyber Safety from an expert in the field. Students had a lot of questions about the "truth" on how the internet works, federal internet law, and their responisiblity in digital citizenship.
LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT (LAFD)
9th Grade was treated to an informative and exciting afternoon with Los Angeles female firefighters who explored careers in the LAFD.
CALIFORNIA HIGH-SPEED RAIL AUTHORITY
GALA was honored with a visit from the all-female light rail team: Michele Boehm (Regional Director), Melissa de la Peña (Regional Manager for Burbank to Anaheim section), and Barbara Marquez (Supervising Environmental Planner). These incredible female leaders oversee the project of over 300 miles of the planned all electric High Speed Rail system in the Southern California Region. Our girls had great questions for these mentors, including questions about their core rock samples taken, which included the same rock type found on the moon!
Lynda Calhoun, founder of Career Girls, came to our campus. Career Girls is the curriculum we use in advisory to discuss careers and issues such as integrity and respect. Lynda and her crew did interviews with some of our girls and faculty for a film on providing girls with mentors in STEM which will be presented to a UN subcommittee in New York. Our college counselor, Ms.Plasencia was interviewed for one of the shorts that will be used on the Careergirls.org website!
MILLION WOMEN MENTORS
Dr. Sangkhae (Center for Iron Disorders researcher) and Dr. Bulut (professor of pediatrics) from UCLA came to disucss medical career pathways with the girls.
